Overton Village Fete
Saturday 24th June 2017
This year's village fete was a tremendously enjoyable community event and, whilst the weather didn’t quite match the wall to wall sunshine with temperatures in the 30s which we’d been having earlier in the week, on Saturday 24th June it never actually rained (hard!)…although it did threaten to …!
This year we had some new additions to the programme: the 50th anniversary Playcentre fancy dress parade and fantastic music provided by the Llangollen Silver Band.
We were overwhelmed by the number of children who joined in the parade from Overton Playcentre; their fancy dress outfits, banners and 'boat' were so colourful and looked fabulous! The addition of the Overton Cricket team playing – and winning! – a match on the adjoining Cricket Pitch just added to the whole afternoon.
The Fun Dog Show was a resounding success again this year with all breeds and owners having a great time. The enthusiasm from dogs and their owners was endless!! Thank you to Jude & Les Moulsdale who made all the arrangements and without whom the Fun Dog Show would not have been possible at all.
Huge thanks go to all our sponsors who donated items to be used at the fete, gave their services free of charge or supplied and enabled us to have loads of fantastic prizes in the Grand Prize Draw.
Whilst the Community Council oversee the organising and running of the fete, with four members of the Council involved throughout, we couldn't do without the help and fresh ideas from our volunteers and those who make the day run smoothly:
Mike Done for lending and delivering some hay bales for us to us
David Hughes - who came along to help set up and clear away
John McCusker - our brilliant announcer
Community Cllrs Clive Hellingman and Tony Walker for popping along and then helping for the whole afternoon!
A special thank you goes to Andrew Jones for cutting the Millennium Meadow in preparation for cars parking on it and to Peter Lynch for working hard to make sure the Park and Football Pitch looked at their best on the day. Louis from Premium Bar Hire also needs a thank you for stepping in at the last minute to serve the beers and other refreshments.
Thank you to the Scout Hut and Village Hall for the loan of some of their tables and also to Mervyn Haynes for painting the sign outside the Village Hall.
The event concluded with the Grand Prize Draw with everyone waiting with baited breath to find out if they had won one of the brilliant prizes donated by local businesses.
Then tables were packed away, gazebos taken down, cars packed up and everyone wended their weary way home with smiles on their faces and thought of next year's fete on their mind. (The fete will be on Saturday 23rd June next year - put the date in your diaries!)
The annual Overton Village Fete is a community event; if you have any comments you’d like to make, if there are any activities or attractions which haven’t made an appearance at any fetes so far or if you’d like to offer your services to help with the organising of next year’s fete (we’re a friendly bunch, it’s a lot of fun and you’d be more than welcome!) please do get in touch.
